This Sage 50 submission error 1046 comes up in two situations, the first situation is when submitting to HMRC from Sage 50 Payroll, and the second situation is when filling out an online form via the HMRC website.
Situation 1: When submitting to HMRC from Sage 50 Payroll- Authentication Failure
Reasons:
- You entered your user ID and password incorrectly in e-Submission Settings.
- HMRC has modified your tax reference but you haven’t done so within your software.
- The Gateway is busy while submitting and can’t validate your details.
- Although you’ve selected the “Submit” button as an agent check box. You are not registered with HMRC as an agent.
Solution:
To solve the error 1046 in Sage 50 Payroll ensure that the District and Tax Reference is correct. To undo the error, you’ll have to check the following and then try to re-submit:
- Go to e-Submissions, then click e-Submission Settings.
- Remove the tax reference number and re-enter a valid tax district/reference number. You must ensure that you keep no blank spaces after the reference. Any letters in the tax district/reference number must be present in the upper case.
- Remove the old ID & Password and re-enter the user ID and password.
- Ensure that if you are not registered as an agent with HMRC, you do not click on the Submit button as an agent and that the check box on the Contact Details tab is clear.
- Check if your tax district/ reference is the same as the details in your e-Submission Settings and if the position of your PAYE for Employers service is working. This you must do by logging in to the website.
