  • Close your QuickBooks
  • Go to the Start >> My Computers
  • Go to the path either:
    • C:\system32\drivers\etc
    • Or, C:\system64\drivers\etc
  • Select Notepad after double-clicking the host file

    • The IP and computer name of the server computer should be available on the workstation.
C. Save the changes to the host’s file

After updating the IP addresses in Notepad on both the server computer and workstation, you have to save the file as well.

  • Open your Notepad and go to the File menu >> select Save
  • Enter your file name as the “hosts” with the quotation marks
  • Select the Desktop >> Save
  • Search the file that you just saved, right-click and select the Copy option
  • Now, browse the file location that you used in step 2, either:
    • C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc
    • Or, C:\Windows\Syswow64\Drivers\Etc
  • Look for the host’s file and give right-click to select the “Rename” option
  • After renaming the host’s file to host old, click Continue
  • Finally, from your keyboard press the Ctrl + V keys and click Continue.

Step 3: Check the Settings of your hosting

Database Server Manager has the ability to reset the hosting settings on your workstations from time to time.

After you’ve scanned your folders, follow the procedures in this guide’s “Solution 1: Turn off hosting on your workstations.”

Step 4: Reset the Database Server Manager

In this step, you have to manually reset your Database Server Manager (DBSM). When you reset then open your company file and you can see everything works fine.

Step 5: Move the company file

  • Open the Start menu on Windows
  • Locate the folder containing your company file within the File Explorer
  • Look for the file that pertains to your company
  • This is how it should look: [your company name]. qbw
  • Copy your company file by right-clicking it
  • Select Paste from the context menu of a blank place on your Windows desktop
  • You now have a copy of your company file
  • QuickBooks Desktop should now be open
  • After that, select Open or restore an existing company
  • To begin, open a company file
  • Look for the company files you copied to your Windows desktop on your PC.

If you can successfully open the copied company file, the issue was with the file location. Return the company file to its original location.

  • QuickBooks Desktop must be closed or quit QuickBooks Desktop from the File menu
  • Rename the duplicate company file by right-clicking it and selecting Rename
  • To make it easier to identify, add the term “Updated” to the filename
  • Open the folder in which your company’s original file is stored
  • Rename your original company file by right-clicking it and selecting Rename
  • Make the filename “Old.” You won’t be using this one any longer
  • To open the folder, drag the copied company file from your Windows desktop to it
  • QuickBooks Desktop is now open
  • Choose Open or restore an existing company, and then click Next
  • Open your company file then browse for and open the copied company file.

From now onwards, you will be able to use the copied company file.
