Section II: Installing on workstations

Quick Tips for Network Install
  • Always install it on the server first.
  • Unless you are in a Terminal Services environment, the application needs to be installed on every computer that will use Sage.
  • Installing on multiple PCs at once is possible with the Network Installation Manager; simply begin at the first workstation and go to the others.
  • Wireless networks are incompatible with the Network Installation Manager.
  • The install files will be extracted into the Destination folder when using the downloadable Sage 50 installer; this is not the application location.
  • To launch the network installation manager when working in a domain environment, you might need to make sure that the PeachtreeInstaller20xx folder has the proper Windows rights set.
  • While Sage 50 Premium and Sage 50 Quantum Accounting can accommodate multiple users, Sage 50 Pro Accounting can not support multiple users.
  • To begin an installation using a virtual machine or remote desktop connection, take the following actions:
    • Hit the Windows+R keyboard shortcut.
    • Enter %temp% and press the OK button.
    • Click the RarSFX0 folder twice.
    • Double-click the folder Peachw.
    • Click the Install folder twice.
    • To launch _setup.exe as an administrator, right-click on it and choose Run.
Quick Tips for Upgrading
  • You will not be able to use the data with the older release if you decide not to replace the older release and instead convert your data into the current version.
  • The install files will be extracted into the Destination folder when using the Sage 50 installer that you downloaded. This is not where the last release was located. During the installation wizard, the previous install location is automatically discovered.
  • Sage installation and removal do not change or remove your company’s data.
  • Your company will be converted to work with the new version when you open it for the first time.

Installing on a workstation on a network

Section 1 – Update an existing workstation after the server was updated

  • The workstation’s program should prompt to install the update when it is opened after the server has been updated. However, if not, you can manually apply the update.
  • Also, you can manually install the update by downloading it from the Sage Knowledgebase.

Section 2 – Install using the Network Installation Manager

  1. Set folder permissions on the PeachtreeInstaller\Year#] shared folder (found in the Program Path by default) at the server.
    1. On the server, locate the program path.
    2. Make sure the PeachtreeInstaller[Year#] folder has Full-Control access by checking the permissions of your data files.
  2. To open a Run line at the workstation, you have to hit the Windows+R keys.
  3. Click OK after entering \\ServerName, where ServerName is the real computer name of your server.
  4. The PeachtreeInstaller[Year#] folder should be double-clicked.
  5. First, double-click the Install folder, and then the Peachw folder.
  6. Run as administrator can be selected by right-clicking _setup.exe.
  7. The setup will start by selecting the settings from the server.

Note:

  • If you have more than one workstation, you can begin installing one before finishing up on the other machine or computers.
  • If the PeachtreeInstaller[Year#] directory cannot be located on the server, the server was installed as a workstation.

Section 3 – Advanced options – Install to a desired data location and/or change the program path

  1. To access the PeachtreeInstaller[Year#] shared folder, go through Steps 1 through 4 above.
  2. When you do a right-click on Setup.exe, choose “Run as administrator.” The install wizard will launch after the setup.

  6. Select option A different computer on the network serves as the server and will store Sage 50 company data on the Sage 50 Company Data Files Storage screen.
  7. Click Next after checking the box that indicates you have already installed Sage 50 on the server.
  8. You can choose a mapped drive or click Find a Computer to map the disk to a network share on the Company Data Files Location page. For the data path, a UNC path is another option.
  9. Choose the program files directory by clicking Next. This should generally be set as the default directory.
  10. Click Install after making sure the location of the company data is accurate.

Note: It is important to confirm that the installed data path on the server is the intended mapped disk or server share.

Installing on a laptop or home computer for Remote Data Access

Through our cloud servers, you can connect to and synchronize your data remotely with Sage Remote Data Access (previously Sage Drive). If you use Remote Data Access on your home computer or bring your laptop home, Sage will access the shared company’s data over the cloud rather than your office’s LAN (Local Area Network).

Note: Both distant standalone environments and current multi-user local network environments for Sage 50 Accounting are advised to use this configuration.

  • Follow the Standalone Installation instructions.
  • As instructed in the installation manual, choose Yes when asked if this is the only computer running Sage 50. You will be able to operate Sage off of your local network by installing this as a standalone installation on your laptop or desktop computer.
  • Make sure Sage 50 is activated.
  • Sage 50 must be closed and reopened for the activation changes to take effect.
  • Next, you have to download your company shared with Remote Data Access.

Any changes you make to your locally downloaded copy of the Sage 50 database after downloading the shared company will synchronize over the cloud with the primary company database and any additional users with whom the data is shared. Similarly, any changes other users make—remotely or in person—will also be synchronized with your computer.

What is my serial number?

Note: By following the instructions on this linked page, you can more quickly locate the serial number of a Sage 50 US Edition version that is currently installed and active within the application.

Option 1 – Purchased directly from Sage

  • Visit the customer portal for Sage.
  • In the top right corner of the page, you have to select Log on.
  • After entering your password and username for the customer portal, you have to click Log on.
  • When you create an account on the Sage Customer Portal, your username will be the email address you use.
  • Choose Activation codes using the option at the top.
  • Click the down arrow to choose your product from the list of options.
  • Refer to the Status column for the relevant Active Application from the product information. Your serial number can be found in the Serial column.

Option 2 – Purchased from a retail location (e.g., Amazon, Staples, Best Buy, Office Depot)

  • The vendor will email or offer you a digital locker with the serial number if you purchase a digital download from them.
  • If you bought a boxed product from a retailer, the serial number is found below the disk in the case.

How to activate Sage 50—U.S. Edition

  • You have to go to the server or the main computer hosting the data.
  • Then you have to open Sage 50.
  • After that, you have to select Help and then you have to select Sage 50 Activation, Licensing, and Subscription Options.
  • You have to select Change your current version and then you have to click OK.
  • Now you have to enter your new Serial Number and then you have to click OK.
  • Sage will close automatically and open again. In case it does not, then you have to close Sage 50 manually and open it again.
  • You have to select Help, and then you have to select About Sage 50 Accounting.
  • Then you have to verify the new serial number that is displayed.

Note: As long as the workstation’s data path points to the correct server data path, Sage 50 will immediately activate the new serial number when it is opened on the workstations.

The workstation most likely has a local data path if it does not detect the new serial number automatically. In this instance, activate the new serial number on the workstation(s) by following steps 2 through 8 above.

Manually activate or update subscriptions

Note: The following instructions are assumed on the user operating on a computer disconnected from the Internet. Suppose online activation is unsuccessful and you need to manually activate. In that case, you can email the activation files from the same computer by saving them to the desktop, even though the instructions say to store them on external media.

Section 1: Create the activation file

Instead, try the following How to have the application compel another Activation to see the Online/Manual Activation options prompt (this is exclusive to Activating Sage 50; it does not apply to updating the subscription).
    • Then you have to click OK.
    • Choose I must begin the process from the beginning and then you have to select Next.
    • Type in the necessary business details (shown by asterisks) and select Next.
    • Save the ActivationRequest.arq file to an external drive, like a USB memory stick, so you may access it from any Internet-connected computer.
    • Now you have to click next.
    • Go to Section 2 and keep the window open.

Section 2: Email activation file

  • Move the external media with the ActivationRequest.arq file you generated in Section 1 to a machine equipped with email capabilities.
  • Attach the ActivationRequest.arq file from the external media to a new email that you create.
  • To Sage50Activation@sage.com, send the file.

Note: You can leave the subject line empty.

  • Within two to five minutes, you should receive a reply email with the file Sage50Activation.sma attached.

  • You have to open Sage 50.
  • Select Help, Licensing and Subscription Options, Sage 50 Activation.
  • You have to select Manually.
  • Choose I have got the activation file that Sage sent me via email.
  • Select Next.
  • After selecting the Browse option, find the Sage50Activation.sma file.

The size of the database, the number of versions it needs to be converted through (for example, a database in version 2016 will take longer to convert than a database in version 2018 or 2019), and the computer’s speed will all affect how long the conversion takes. (The years 2022 and 2023.0 are not convertible.)

Is Sage an upgrade or a new installation?

  • Sage can be downloaded as an upgrade or as a complete installation package.
  • The application will update the required files if Sage is already installed.
  • Download the complete application if you want to install the new version while keeping the previous one.
  • You will be able to choose whether to upgrade or install to a new location during the installation process; selecting a new location will leave your previous version.

Which device receives an upgrade first?

  • Sage must be upgraded on the server, the computer that hosts the data before it can be used on a network.
  • Users should wait to start Sage until all of their workstations have been upgraded once the server has been upgraded.
  • Open and print the Sage 50 – Network Installation Manager Instructions after the server has been upgraded.
  • After the server installation, all workstations can have the program installed simultaneously.

Can I keep all my settings when I upgrade?

  • Most of the settings are kept upon upgrading.
  • After the company is converted, some user preferences will be changed to defaults; to modify these settings, select Options, Global.
  • Additionally, the default printing forms will be reset; When printing, you have to select Select Form to make changes to the form (each type of transaction requires this).

To which version of Sage do I need to upgrade?

  • Generally, you want the exact version that you were previously using; for example, if you are now using Pro 2022, you require Pro 2023.
  • Businesses cannot be converted to lower versions/releases; for example, a Quantum corporation cannot be converted to Premium. Instead, they can only be transferred to the same or higher version/releases.
  • Release 2015 phased out some versions/releases; if you were using one of the following versions/releases, you will be upgraded to the release that is mentioned.
    • Complete will upgrade to Premium
    • Premium for Non-Profits upgrade to Quantum
    • Premium for Construction will upgrade to Quantum
    • Premium for Manufacturing will upgrade to Quantum
    • Premium for Distribution will upgrade to Quantum

Will I need to convert my data after upgrading?

  • A conversion from 2021.0 and below is necessary after updating to 2023.0. There is no need to convert from 2021.1 or 2022 to 2023.0.
  • When each company opens for the first time in the new Sage version or release, the conversion wizard will launch automatically.

Can I upgrade by visiting the Help, Activation, Licensing, and Subscription Options pages for Sage 50?

  • It is not possible to upgrade the application from 2021 to 2022 or 2023 using the Change your current version option; instead, you must enter the new serial number you received in your Download Notification email to go from Pro to Premium or Quantum, or from Premium to Quantum.

Can I store company data on a connected external disk to the server?

No, data files need to be installed on a local drive on the server.

Can I move the files to a new location and update the.INI file after installing Sage on the server?

No, doing this will cause Sage to malfunction.

Why is it not possible to install Sage 50 on Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, or Windows XP?

Sage 50 requires specific Windows components to function, and these components are incompatible with earlier Windows versions.
